ADHD
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
What is ADHD?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that occurs in approximately 5% of children and adolescents. Children with ADHD may struggle to focus on tasks, sit still, and control their impulses, which can negatively impact their academic performance and social relationships. Despite its prevalence, ADHD requires tailored interventions to help young individuals manage their symptoms effectively in their daily lives.
Care and Management
At the Queen Fabiola Children's University Hospital (HUDERF), ADHD is managed by a multidisciplinary team. Our pediatric neurologists and neuropsychologists are experts in diagnosing and treating ADHD in young patients.
Diagnosis: A thorough clinical evaluation is conducted to ensure an accurate diagnosis. This includes interviews, questionnaires, and neuropsychological tests to assess attention, memory, and other cognitive functions.
Treatment: Treatment for ADHD may involve behavioral therapies, medications to improve concentration and reduce hyperactivity, and educational interventions to support the child's school journey.
Tips for Parents
Parents play a vital role in managing ADHD. Here are some tips to help your child:
- Structure and Routine: Establish clear and structured routines to provide a sense of security and help your child manage their time better.
- Positive Reinforcement: Use encouragement and rewards to reinforce positive behaviors.
- Communication: Maintain open communication with teachers and healthcare professionals to ensure consistent and effective care.
- Physical Activities: Encourage participation in physical activities to channel energy and improve concentration.
- Education: Educate yourself about ADHD and join support groups to exchange tips and experiences with other parents.
