Tobaccology
Summary
What is it?
Tobaccology is the medical discipline that studies tobacco and the effects of smoking. Smoking is harmful for the smoker (active smoking) and for those around the smoker (passive smoking).
Smoking induces a triple dependency: physical related to the nicotine content; psychological due to the belief that “smoking makes me feel good”; behavioural through an “automatism”. Consulting a tobacco addiction specialist is therefore strongly recommended as such a specialist is a health professional who has been trained to support people in their efforts to stop smoking, increasing their chances of success and helping ensure that the process runs smoothly.
Care
Are you a smoker who wants to stop? Have you already tried and failed?
The Children’s Hospital in cooperation with the other HUB hospitals (Erasmus Hospital and Jules Bordet Institute) assist smokers and also adolescents and pregnant women who want to stop smoking. In the course of consultations various psychological and/or medicinal approaches will be proposed and, above all, you will benefit from adapted personalised tools to help you in your efforts to stop smoking.
You smoke but you are not yet ready to stop?
Stopping smoking is a difficult decision and for some patients it takes time. The HUB tobacco addiction specialists can give you advice and support! All the HUB tobacco addiction specialists are expert teachers with a certificate in tobaccology and trained in the motivational interview; all consultations are centred on the individual so as to motivate the smoker to stop.
Advice
Stopping smoking is always worth the effort whatever your age! So give yourself the best possible chance of success in stopping smoking!
Don’t hesitate to contact the tobacco addiction specialists at the CAF (Help Centre for Smokers) at the HUB:
- CAF Jules Bordet Institute: 02 5413055
- CAF Erasmus Hospital: 02 555 3773
- Children’s Hospital-HUDERF : 02 477 30 35 (specify tobaccology), consultations at the CHU-Brugmann.
If you are not yet ready to stop and are continuing to smoke: protect your loved ones by only smoking outdoors and not at home or in the car!
Focus
The three hospitals of the HUB are participants on the Smoke Free Hospitals project.
The Children’s Hospital is also committed to the No Smoking Generation movement to stop children from taking up smoking. The aim of Smoke Free Hospitals is to guarantee a quality of life for hospital staff and patients. It is therefore prohibited to smoke (and to vape) inside the hospital and at entrances accessible to the public.
